Japan’s beloved “Okosama Lunch” isn’t just a kids’ meal

Japan’s beloved “Okosama Lunch” isn’t just a kids’ meal—it has a rich history dating back to December 1930, when the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi main store introduced the original Okosama Yōshoku (children’s Western-style meal). Chef Mr. Taro Ando, aiming to bring smiles during the global economic depression, created an imaginative one-plate feast featuring items like hamburger steak, fried shrimp, and ketchup fried rice shaped like Mt. Fuji, adorned with a tiny summit flag.

Depending on the restaurant, there may be an age limit—usually it's available for children under 8, or in some places under 12.

Even American chain Denny’s in Japan offers adorable Japanese‑style kids’ meals, and the recently expanded Marugame Udon—super popular among teens—sells bowls for just ¥290 (just a few dollars)! Japan is full of family‑friendly dining options like these, making it a very kid‑welcoming country.

The term "Okosama Lunch" doesn’t have a direct English equivalent, so it’s not easy to find by searching in English. If you’re curious, try searching “お子様ランチ” to see all the colorful, fun results!

** Prices shown are as of July 22, 2025. Please note that prices may vary by restaurant location, and some branches may not offer Okosama Lunch at all.

** Please also check the age restrictions. Japan is very strict about rules—most of the time, adults cannot order the Okosama Lunch at all.
